Warner Claims KOD Sportsman Victory At Fonda

April 18, 2015 (Fonda, NY) – On a packed night at Fonda Speedway fans were treated to an opener for the ages. The Basement Systems King Of Dirt Crate Sportsman Series Presented By Dodson Construction, Kevin Koval’s Adirondack Basement Systems, and Driven By Hoosier Racing Tire teamed up with it’s sister series the Lazzaro’s Auto Body King Of Dirt Pro Stock Series to kick off a brand new racing season with some familiar faces earning big wins.

Rocky Warner is a familiar face often found in victory lane and the ‘flyin squirrel’ didn’t disappoint his fans at the KOD Ice Melt 30 Lap opener, as he used his familiarity with the track of champions to power to the win in the West End Towing 79 one night after conquering the great race place in the Jake Spraker 1J.

Josh Sunn and Greg Havlicek led the field to the green, but it was Rocky Warner who made a quick move on lap 1 taking the lead from his 3rd starting position. Havlicek in the Miracle Ear 15b was left to battle with Sunn in the Gary’s Property Maintenance 11 for 2nd with the Dodson Construction 14 of Chad Edwards moving quickly to the top 4 from his 6th starting spot.

The first and only caution of the race came on lap 3 when an accident on the back stretch collected up the Kollar Motorsports 10% of Cody Clark, DKM Fabrication 7 of Dave Constantino, and the Eckler Racing 12s of Shea Montgomery. Whitey Slavin in the Cedar Peaks 53 appeared to also suffer some front-end damage that ended his evening.

On the restart Warner powered back into the lead, while Edwards made a big move to get into the 3rd position, which he moved into 2nd just a couple laps later on lap 5.

Bear Ridge Speedway had some of their heavy hitters on hand and they were making their presence known. Josh Sunn spent the entire race battling in the top 5, which is impressive for a driver who has never seen the track of champions. Another 1st timer at Fonda was the Connecticut Valley Auto Auctions 00 of Jason Gray who finished 6th respectively. Biggest mover was the CDR Concrete 15 of Adam Pierson who slid back to 11th at the start from his 4th place starting spot only to put on a show driving back up to 3rd by the races end.

With Warner out front working his way through lap traffic, it was Edwards trying to close in after the halfway point. With the pair broke away from the field all eyes were on the M&J Construction 27b of Robert Bublak Jr. and the McAuliffe Trucking 234 of Adam McAuliffe.

Bublak was charging through the top side making pass after pass on the Cassella Waste Management 61s of John Scarborough and eventually the Gray 00 to take 5th where he would finish.

Adam McAuliffe was using the extreme outside to make noise and wow the crowd moving 25th to finish 13th after 30 laps. McAuliffe would be named hard charger for the event improving the most positions.

Rocky Warner wasn’t to be denied starting off the season with a big King Of Dirt Crate Sportsman Series win. Edwards, Pierson, Sunn, Bublak Gray, Ricky Quick, Chris Schaffer, Scarborough, and Mark Mortensen rounded out the top 10.

  • 81 cars were on hand for the first King Of Dirt Racing Series events. 45 Crate Sportsman and 36 Pro Stocks checked in. Chad Edwards debuted a brand new Dodson Construction Bicknell with a new number and grabbed a strong 2nd place run.
  • 3 drivers from Bear Ridge made the trip to Fonda for the KOD opener. Adam Pierson, Josh Sunn, and Jason Gray all finished impressively in the top 10.
  • Both Eckler Racing teammates Shea Montgomery and Aaron Burton qualified for the KOD opener, which is a solid start for the pair.
  • Greg Havlicek picked a good day to have the best run of his young career after starting up front and racing with some heavy hitters the 15b finished 12th respectively.
  • John Scarborough was a force early on racing into the top 5 only to have his car fade mid race relegating him to a respective 9th place finish.
  • Albany-Saratoga track champion Jeremy Pitts drove from deep in the field to 11th respectively during the Ice Melt opener.
  • Tracks represented in Sportsman were Fonda, Albany-Saratoga, Bear Ridge, Devil’s Bowl, Merrittville, Brockville, Lebanon Valley, Glen Ridge, and Utica Rome.
