September 9, 2017 (West Lebanon, NY) – When a driver has raced 30 plus years there isn’t many ‘firsts’ left to claim. On Saturday night at Lebanon Valley Speedway sure to be hall-of-fame driver Kenny Tremont Jr. etched another first into his historic record book when he took the 35-lap King Of Dirt Racing Small Block Modified feature win.
Demetrios Drellos and Brett Haas led the field to the green flag with Drellos taking the early race lead. Haas settled into second with Dirt Rush driver Jason Herrington battling for third with Frank Hoard III.
Kenny Tremont Jr. and JR Heffner were two favorites for the victory heading into the event and restarted 11th and 12th, but wasted no time going to work and moving forward. By lap six the pair was running 5th and 7th.
Tour regular Allison Ricci had an impressive run going of her own going and found herself battling with fellow tour competitor Neil Stratton for position inside the top six. KOD Small Block point leader Marc Johnson wasn’t far behind having a battle of his own inside the top 10 with Elmo Reckner for position.
Up front a battle for the lead. Haas used the high line to pass Drellos off turn two taking the top spot before a yellow would slow the field for the first time. Utica Rome regular Randy Shantel was facing the wrong direction on the inside of turn four.
On the restart Drellos would again challenge for the lead he once held, but Haas was strong taking the point. Tremont moved into third leaving Herrington to fend off the advances of Heffner for the fourth position.
Ricci was still working her way forward, but had her hands full fending off Marc Johnson. Behind them Frank Harper and Brain Sandstedt were battling for position inside the top 10.
Tremont began pressuring Drellos for the runner up position, as leader Haas worked his way through traffic with 10 laps left in the feature event. Just then a yellow flag flew for the 6 of Bryan McGuire who had spun in turn two almost collecting Haas the leader. Drellos made slight contact giving the young gun a flat left front. He’d head to the pits for tire change and return.
On the restart Haas had his hands full with the King Of The Valley, Kenny Tremont Jr. The 115 would pressure for the lead and take the top spot with just six laps left coming off turn four.
Yellow flew once again on lap 33 for a multi-car tangle in turn one including Brian Peterson, Jack Lehner, Chad Pierce, Brian Sandstedt, Jessey Mueller, and Brandon Pitcher. The field would restack for a green-white-checker finish.
On the restart Heffner pushed up opening the door for Haas and Herrington to move by for 2nd and 3rd, but Tremont wasn’t going to be denied. He’d pick up the 35-lap victory and seal the 2017 Lebanon Valley Speedway 358 Modified title in the process. Brett Haas, Jason Herrington, JR Heffner, and Allison Ricci rounded out the top five.
“Really feels good and I’m proud of my guys. Car ran really well and we ran a little bit better than we were and ended the season on a good note,” said Tremont in victory lane.
“Car was phenomenal and it’s a perfect way to end the season. I can’t thank my team, my dad, and my girlfriend enough for the support. It was a great to be here for King Of Dirt on the front stretch and it’s a great momentum builder,” said second place finisher Brett Haas.
“It was a good run. Track got slick towards the end, but we capitalized on the late race restart and ended up third, which was good,” said third place finisher Jason Herrington.
