‘Krazy’ Kenny Martin Wins KOD Pro Stock Tour Race At Devil’s Bowl; Rob Yetman Survives To Win Title

September 17, 2017 (Malta, NY) – Rob Yetman and Nick Stone headed into the King Of Dirt Racing Pro Stock finale at Devil’s Bowl Speedway separated by a mere seven points. Kenny Martin Jr. had a shot at the title also and did just what he needed to do, which was win. Rob Yetman had to survive and that he did.

Kenny Martin Jr. and Rich Crane led the field to green during the 29 lap Carl Vladyka Memorial. Yellow quickly flew on lap one when Devon Camenga found himself facing the wrong way in turn three collecting up Jeff Washburn.

Back to green flag racing and Martin went to the lead, while Nick Stone began working the high side on Jon Routhier for third. Just a lap later all heck broke loose when Nick Stone lost the handles in turn one on the 27n spinning and collecting up Jason Casey, Byron Wescott, and Rob Yetman the point leader.

All drivers were able to drive away from the incident, however the Lazzaro’s Auto Body team seven for Rob Yetman scrambled on pit road to remove pieces of the front end damaged. He’d return with no fender, hood, or front bumper. Before the green flag would come back out Kenny Martin Jr. had assumed the point lead. The KOD Pro Stock title was in his grasp.

Green flag flew once again for a single file restart and Martin went back to leading the event. Crane and Routhier continued to battle, with Newcomer Of The Year Jason Meltz and Jeff Washburn having their own battle for position.

Stone and Yetman were glued together trying desperately to make up track position, while Martin did the most he could and led the feature event clicking off laps.

Back up front great battles between Routhier and Meltz along with Washburn and Dumblewski for top five positions. Scott Govertsen was having a solid run in seventh.

By the mid way point of the race Kenny Martin Jr. was starting to hit lap traffic, which allowed Rich Crane to close in and battle for the top spot. Suddenly in turn one Nick Stone had something go away in the Manimal Chassis collecting up his championship counterpart Rob Yetman.

Stone would be done for the evening, but another development coming down from race control had Kenny Martin Jr. with a one-point advantage. Yetman had to get two positions to tie with Martin. If Martin won the race he’d win the tiebreaker with two wins on the season.

On the restart Martin was under fire from Crane, Routhier, and Meltz who went four wide off turn two in a hotly contested battle for the top spot. While that was happening Rob Yetman was patiently picking off positions. The ‘Big Cat’ was determined to lock up the 2017 King Of Dirt Racing Pro Stock Championship.

Despite some late race challenges the Albany Saratoga Speedway track champion Kenny Martin Jr. held on for his second win of the season picking up the victory in the 29 lap Carl Vladyka Memorial and cashing in on the $1,029 payday. Jon Routhier, Byron Wescott, Rich Crane, and Rob Yetman rounded out the top five.

“It felt pretty good to start up front, but we had to hold back some really good guys. We won two of these KOD races this year and we know this is a memorial race so our hearts go out to the Vladyka family,” said Kenny Martin Jr. in victory lane.

“It was tough on the restarts. None of us have ever raced here before with these cars, but it was fun. You had to be on the wheel the whole time,” said second place finisher Jon Routhier.

“It was fun. I didn’t mean to rough up the 711 on the last lap. I drove it in there and the car didn’t stick so we got into him and I apologize for that,” said third place finisher Byron Wescott.

Rob Yetman held on to win the King Of Dirt Racing Pro Stock title by six points over Kenny Martin Jr. at the Devil’s Bowl finale.

“Man-o-man, I have to thank my crew first. These guys have been digging and digging. I took a shot early in the race and thought, well we’re done. They fixed it up and got me back out there and we just hung on. I don’t like counting cars, I just want to race, but I started counting cars,” said 2017 King Of Dirt Pro Stock Champion Rob Yetman.
