May 28, 2018 (Fair Haven, VT) – Kenny Tremont has taught a lot of drivers valuable lessons in his hall-of-fame career and apparently White River Junction, VT driver Josh Sunn was taking notes. Late in the 30 lap Stars ‘N Stripes KOD Sportsman event Sunn used an amazing set of moves on the eight time Devil’s Bowl Champion to secure his first career tour win.
49 cars on hand to kick off the Andy’s Speed Shop King Of Dirt Racing Sportsman Modified Series tour at Devil’s Bowl Speedway with Josh Sunn and Scott Duell leading the 30 car A-Main field to the green flag, with Sunn taking the early lead.
Not long into the event a tough break for the Kevin Chaffee who came to a stop in turn three and would retire for the evening after just a few laps. The field would restack and go back to green flag racing.
On the restart Kenny Tremont Jr. made his move from sixth to third and began pressuring the Chad Edwards Troyer machine for position, while Chris Curtis, Adam Pierson, Connor Cleveland, and David Schilling engaged in a battle of their own.
Michael Sabia, Chris Curtis, and Jordan Fornwalt found themselves battling for position inside the top 10 until they went three wide coming off turn two, which saw Curtis on the short end of the situation making heavy contact with the inside retaining wall in turn three ending his evening.
Couple of movers and shakers making their way forward included Joey Scarborough and Justin Comes who were contending for the Hoosier Tire hard charger award available to any driver who didn’t use a provisional starting position. Scarborough would end up claiming the honors by races end moving up 10 spots to finish 6th.
Back up front while Edwards and Pierson battled for the 3rd position, an epic battle was taking place for the top spot. Tremont, who is allowed to run the KOD specials for Sportsman Modifieds at the bowl due to his track status as a regular, was closing in on Josh Sunn who had led from the start.
He would make his move using the topside of the speedway, until a yellow slowed the field. It’s at this point Josh Sunn had the large Memorial Day crowd on their feet, as on the restart he used the same move on the hall-of-fame 115 to take the lead back.
Only a few laps later Tremont would battle back and retake the top spot with only a handful of laps remaining, but Sunn wouldn’t take no for an answer. He was making moves three wide through traffic and used a all-or-nothing inside slider for the ages to get in front of Tremont and drive home to the Stars ‘N Stripes victory in Vermont.
Josh Sunn, Kenny Tremont, Adam Pierson, Chad Edwards, Connor Cleveland, Joey Scarborough, Tim Laduc, Michael Sabia, Justin Comes, and Tanner Siemons rounded out the top 10 finishers.
“Oh man that move in traffic three wide was one of those moments where you just send it and hope it works. It was either going to work or not end well. I wanted to win this race bad,” said Sunn in victory lane.
“Hat’s off to Josh, I mean he was really driving that thing hard. You could tell he wanted it for sure,” said Tremont following his 2nd place run.
“What a race. I’m just glad I could see it from where I was,” Adam Pierson commented after his 3rd place finish.
Next stop for the KOD Sportsman Modified tour is Utica Rome Speedway on Sunday June 3rd along with KOD 358 Modifieds and KOD Pro Stocks. It’ll be an action packed triple-header in Vernon, NY.
