Billy Dunn & Dave Marcuccilli Storm To KOD Victories At Utica Rome Speedway

July 2, 2018 (Vernon, NY) – Saying it was hot Sunday night would be a gross understatement. It was blistering and the action on the track at Utica Rome matched the temperatures, as Billy Dunn and Dave Marcuccilli were red hot in pursuit of victory at the action track of the east.

What better way to Salute The Troops than kick off the fourth of July with a 40-lap Victoria Small Block Modified race, where Jack Lehner and Billy Dunn led the field to the green flag. Dunn would quickly take the race lead, with Rocky Warner moving into the runner up spot after lap one.

Lehner would be left to fend off the early challenges of Bobby Varin and Lance Willix for top five positioning, while the high flying Bobby Herrington, Genoa Giant Pat Ward, and hall-of-fame ‘AJ Slideways’ Alan Johnson all battled for position inside the top 10.

At the mid-way point the battle raged on up front between Newcomer Of The Year contender Rocky Warner and Super Dirt Week champion Billy Dunn. Warner actually used a high side pass to take the top spot from Dunn leaving him to fend off the impressive charge of Bobby Herrington who was pressuring for the top spot as well.

In the later stages Dunn proved too strong, as he’d motor home to the 40-lap Victoria win at Utica. It was his first at the track and on the KOD 358 Modified tour. Lance Willix ran an impressive race moving up into the runner up spot, with Pat Ward making his way to third, Warner fourth, and Alan Johnson rounding out the top five.

Bobby Herrington, Demetrios Drellos, Jessey Mueller, Marc Johnson, and Billy Whittaker rounded out the top 10.

“This car is pretty fast everywhere we take it. I had a fun time. I thought Rocky was going to take off on us, but I closed back in and took the lead back so here we are,” said Billy Dunn in victory lane.

Michael Sabia and Mark Effner brought the KOD Sportsman field to the green flag, with Sabia taking the early race lead. DIRTcar Sportsman champion Dave Marcuccilli who enjoys running KOD races when he can, wasted no time in taking the runner up spot.

Behind them a three wide battle with David Schilling, Connor Cleveland, and Matt Janczuk was shaping up just behind crown contender Chad Edwards, who were all battling inside the top 10.

A red flag slowed the field on lap four when a multi car tangle in turn three ended with Chris Mackey rolling over. Involved were Brian Hudson, Corey Barker, Chris Cunningham, Ricky Quick, Rob Maxon, and Chris Mackey. All drivers were uninjured, but Mackey would be done for the evening.

On the restart Marcuccilli wasted no time in taking the lead, while behind him Andrew Buff was making moves on the high side climbing into the top three running positions. Kyle Kiehn, Matt Janczuk, and AJ Filbeck were all making their presence felt racing for top five positions as well.

By the mid point of the race Marcuccilli had checked out with a sizeable lead, while behind him Janczuk wrestled the runner up spot from Kiehn, Kyle Inman was moving up into the top five, and former King Of Dirt champion Connor Cleveland was moving up as well challenging for top five positioning.

In the closing laps Inman would battle with Kiehn and eventually take over the third position, Cleveland solidified the fourth position, but nobody was catching Marcuccilli who rolled to his first career KOD Sportsman win. Janczuk, Inman, Cleveland, Filbeck, Kiehn, Sabia, Buff, Edwards, and Taylor Lamb rounded out the top 10.

“This is pretty cool. When we went for the redraw Rocky Warner drew for me and I drew for him. I didn’t know what those guys were doing behind me, but I was racing like they were on my ass the whole time. It’s pretty cool; it’s my first KOD win. It always seemed like Rocky stole them from me,” said a playfully happy Marcuccilli in victory lane.
