Cleveland Leads KOD ‘Dirty Dozen’ Sportsman Modified Drivers At Weedsport Kicking Off Super Dirt Week Racing Action; Schilling Suffers DNF

October 3, 2018 (Oswego, NY) – Weedsport Speedway was the first racing action fans have seen this week during their annual Super Dirt Week kick off event for DIRTcar 358 Modifieds and DIRTcar Sportsman. King Of Dirt Racing had a pair of ‘Dirty Dozen’ drivers in the field in the form of ‘Kid Rocket’ and the exciting adventures of the ‘Showstopper’ along with an honorable mention in the form of a Northeast Crate Nationals Champion. At the end of the night it was 2-time Sportsman King Of Dirt Connor Cleveland who had the best outcome.

Connor Cleveland had a dominant season on the King Of Dirt Racing Sportsman Modified tour finishing in the top five an astounding five out of six races. As a matter of fact the only thing that slowed ‘Kid Rocket’ down was mechanical failure at Lebanon Valley Speedway; a race in which he had the lead and looked to be headed towards another tour win.

The Dean’s Electrical – Broadalbin Manufacturing driver started the night off behind the proverbial eight ball, as the transponder wasn’t registering times. Unfortunately this meant he’d have to start tail of the field in the heat race and qualifying spots were at a premium with a large field of cars on hand at the port.

Connor would start 9th on the grid and drove to a 4th place finish, but with only three cars transferring to the 30-lap feature event it meant he’d have to run a last chance qualifier. After the LCQ was complete he’d lock himself into the feature, which earned him the 20th starting position.

Starting 20th in a talent rich field is no easy task, as Cleveland found himself in multiple battles for position throughout the event. Early on it was Corey Barker and James Michael-Friesen giving the 2-time champ fits until he found his rhythm. Methodically moving forward and avoiding incidents was key on a tricky track surface, but in the end Cleveland battled with DIRTcar Sportsman Modified stars Shane Pecore and Brianna Ladouceur before finishing 10th respectively.

David Schilling had a much different kind of evening beginning with timed hot laps where he found himself on the receiving end of contact in the straightaway from fellow competitor Richard Paige for reasons unknown. Despite that he was able to time 5th fastest in his group heading into the heat race qualifier.

On the first lap of the heat race qualifying event the ‘showstopper’ made a move to pass former Albany Saratoga Speedway track champion Jeremy Pitts to take over the 4th position. That’s where Schilling would finish just one spot out of a transfer sending him to the last chance qualifier, where he’d grab the lead from DIRTcar Sportsman standout Greg Doust and cruise to the win putting him in the 30-lap feature event.

Schilling would fire from the 19th starting position and begin his efforts to move forward, however that was short lived as on lap six melee that included 10 cars after Jeff Taylor made contact with Adam Pierson sending the field scrambling. He’d drive away from the accident and restart 27th with a lot of work ahead of him to even sniff a top 10 finish.

So began the charge from the tail of the field, as Schilling raced with Canadian tour standout Martin Pellitier, new DKM Cyclone driver Fred Proctor, and Bear Ridge Speedway stud Kevin Chaffee just to name a few. He had impressively worked his way back through the field to the 14th position, before retiring to the pits on lap 27 done for the evening. It was a disappointing 21st place finish for the award winning KOD tour driver.
