October 5, 2018 (Oswego, NY) – Mother Nature finally took a day off Friday, which allowed drivers their first chance to get on the track for Super Dirt Week at the clay palace. With Bobby Varin running satellite shows only with his DIRTcar 358 Modified, the Palmer Racing team’s focus was on the Big Block efforts where the champ experienced the highs and lows of racing’s biggest party.
2018 King Of Dirt Racing 358 Modified King Bobby Varin started off in practice turning the 19th fastest time overall. Certainly there was room for improvement, but as the track changed throughout the day it would seem any adjustments may have went in the wrong direction when he hit the track for time trials.
The track had changed drastically from practice to Big Block time trials for the Palmer Racing number 76 driven by series and track champion Bobby Varin. Smooth and tacky to smooth and slick makes a huge difference and it showed when Varin turned in the 47th overall time out of 70 drivers with a lap of 22.152.
Have no fear, as Varin and team went to work making gains on the Teo Pro Car heading into the Gander Outdoors 30-lap qualifying event. Starting 16th on the grid he’d waste no time battling for position with drivers like Tim Sears Jr., Nick Webb, and Adam Roberts. Perhaps the most fun Varin had was racing with his son Danny while passing by his rival at the track of champions, Josh Hohenforst.
When the checkered flag flew over the field in Gander Outdoors 30-lap qualifying event number two, Bobby Varin had driven from 16th to a 9th place finish. By doing so the multi-time champion locked himself into the Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux 200 Sunday where he’ll start 27th in the field.
