October 6, 2018 (Oswego, NY) – Jessey Mueller had no plans to run the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds at Super Dirt week, rather focusing on his Big Block program. That all changed Thursday night when he loaded up at Brewerton Speedway and saved his equipment to take a run at the Camping World 150. After struggles in qualifying he’d start the LCQ 12th and wow the crowd running to the lead, before a heartbreaking conclusion to his Small Block efforts at the scales.
The ‘heavy hauler’ is a high flying one man show on the dirt tracks and took to the track at Oswego for Super Dirt Week 47 after patiently waiting out the weather. He’d time 36th fastest out of 70 for the Big Block Modifieds with a lap time of 21.843 and battled with Rob Bellinger, Rich Scagliotta, and Jack Lehner before crossing the line 11th at the finish of his 30-lap qualifier. He missed out by one spot for the Billy Whitaker Cars & Trux 200 and will run the LCQ on Sunday.
Attention was shifted to the Small Block program where he timed 37th fastest out of 69 cars with absolutely no practice time on the clay palace. He went out for his 25-lap qualifier and found the high side to his liking making some moves before crossing the finish line 13th. This would set Jessey up in the second 20-lap Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday.
To say he put on a show is an understatement. Starting 12th he patiently waited to make his move in the 358 Modified LCQ battling with CG Morey and Bobby Herrington for position inside the top 10. Midway through the race he found the top to his liking once again and started making passes. He passed Herrington, he passed Demetrios Drellos, drove by Mike Maresca, dusted off Matt Farhnam, had a big run past Rich Scagliotta, and toasted Steve Bernard for the lead.
The only thing that could stop Mueller was the scales unfortunately. Jessey reportedly came up 10 pounds light negating his great run and relegating him to a spectator for the Camping World 150. A tough break after an exciting run for Mueller and team, but they’ll start 5th in the LCQ for Big Block Modifieds on Sunday.
